The phrase thus . . . also have indicates “a similarity between the teaching of Balaam and the Nicolaitans.”¹

The problem for the church at Pergamum was not that Nicolaitans existed in the city, but that they were within the church. We are to separate from those who call themselves believers, but deny Christ by their actions (1Cor. 1Cor. 5:11).
